3. The Contract
It was, by far, the strangest and most grotesque dream she had ever had.
A black wolf rampaged across the white snowfield, tearing, ripping, and chewing people apart with a sickening crunch. Seongwon cried out desperately for her to run, and the black wolf crushed his head underfoot, flattening it.
And then. And then...
"Found you."
"Hngh!"
She gasped sharply and flung her eyes open.
Everything before her was dark. Had night already fallen while she had her eyes closed for a moment?
But the winter tundra was said to be so dominated by the midnight sun that days when darkness fell were rare. And surely no one would have let her sleep without waking her all this time.
Where's the guide? Where's Seongwon-ssi?
She turned her head and scanned her surroundings.
She saw a ceiling densely hung with icicles as sharp as the wolf's teeth. It was a place she had never seen before.
"Ah..."
A chill rose from the floor. Only then did Yeju realize she was lying on the ground.
It wasn't the forest. The forest that had been there just moments ago.
"Wh-where is this? Where am I..."
Sitting bolt upright, she looked around frantically with a terrified face.
The place she was in was a large, dark cave where no grass was visible at all.
Was there a cave exploration on the tour course?
She shook her head immediately. Ice caves formed when weak parts of the ground collapsed.
A schedule exploring such a dangerous place couldn't possibly be part of a simple sightseeing tour.
"What on earth, what on earth happened? Where is this..."
She gasped and scrambled backward. That was when it happened.
Tak.
At that moment, something blunt touched her back. It wasn't the wall.
"Agh!"
Startled out of her wits, Yeju screamed and hurriedly retreated.
Having leaped all the way to the opposite wall, she slowly turned her head. To confirm what had touched her back.
"Hngh, hnnng..."
It was a sight she would have been better off not seeing.
What lay where she had been sitting just moments ago was none other than a corpse. Dark red blood had dried in patches here and there.
Perhaps a long time had passed since death—a dark, fleshless skull stared at Yeju in solitude.
Her breathing grew rougher. Her mouth fell open, and just as the suffocation worsened—
Something strange suddenly caught her eye. The blue jumper and hat the skeleton wore. They were terribly familiar.
"Ah... Dad?"
They were the very things she and her father had bought together, wandering a department store, seven years ago when he left for Russia.
No. It can't be.
She denied reality, doubting her own eyes. But the unrotted clothes were no illusion.
"Hngh, hnnng... Ah, Dad, Dad...!"
Yeju collapsed to the ground as if crumbling. And like a fool, fumbling and crawling, she made her way toward the corpse.
Close up, a familiar pendant hung around the corpse's neck. With trembling hands, she grasped it and opened it.
Click— Inside the pendant, which opened with a cheerful sound, was a photo of herself—short bobbed hair, smiling brightly. It was her middle school graduation photo.
Besides the pendant, both hands of the corpse held a black notebook her father had carried on every expedition and a fountain pen she had given him as a birthday gift.
She could no longer deny it. The corpse was her father.
"Ugh... hnng..."
Her breath caught. She sobbed, tears streaming down.
Truthfully, somewhere deep inside, she may have prepared herself to some extent.
No matter how consumed by research he was, her father was not so heartless as to go three years without a single call.
Even as she boarded the plane, her hope of meeting him had not been great.
But even so.
Even so, she had never imagined she would find her father dead like this, alone and frozen in a far-off foreign land.
"Why. Why..."
Her eyes stung as if burning, and soon hot droplets rolled down her cheeks.
The moment she finally accepted that her father was dead, all the resentment, longing, and grief she had suppressed came bursting out like a dam breaking.
"Was it... was this place really so wonderful?"
She glared at the corpse and ground her teeth.
"Abandoning a daughter who hasn't even graduated school, letting her be called a parentless child—was it worth coming all the way here to die?"
She had thought that if word of his death came suddenly, she would be fine.
She had lived well on her own since high school. She fed herself, went to school, studied, and in the end got into university just fine.
She could live well enough without a father. If not for the dreams, she would never have come to this godforsaken cold place—she told herself that, forcing the thought.
But she swore—never, not once, not a single time—had she ever wished for him to die alone in some remote place like this.
"How could you do this to me! I let you do everything you wanted without a word! I never once told you not to go!"
"......"
"But why! Why—!"
Yeju's wretched sobbing echoed hollowly through the cave.
Yet no matter how she sought an answer, no reply came from the corpse wearing her father's clothes.
"How could you do this to me! How could you! Answer me!"
"......"
"Answer me, Dad! Hngh, Dad. Dad. Dad..."
Having cried out endlessly for her father like a small child, Yeju, her face utterly drained, finally let go of the corpse she had been shaking.
No matter how she pressed him, the dead had no words.
She wrapped her arms around herself and huddled tightly beside the corpse.
"What do I do now?"
It was cold. Even inside a cave where not a breath of wind entered, her body shivered as if she had chills.
"If I die like this... how am I supposed to live alone now? I'm scared, Dad. I'm so scared I could die..."
Clinging close to the heatless corpse, she trembled violently.
But she couldn't stay like this forever, doing nothing.
Rubbing her tear-blurred eyes fiercely, she once again carefully scanned the cave.
But among the several passages opening in all directions, she couldn't tell which one led to an exit.
Moreover, unlike this place—where she could barely distinguish objects thanks to some unknown light seeping in—the far side of the passages was pitch black without a single point of light.
She squeezed her eyes shut, filled with despair, then opened them again.
Opening her eyes did not bring about some cinematic moment where she woke from this horrible, disgusting nightmare.
The sobs escaping her lips grew even more violent. Like a ghost's whisper, they lingered quietly in the cave and echoed grimly.
---
Only after a long time did Yeju barely regain her composure.
She decided first to fully accept her father's death.
In any case, it wasn't a possibility she had entirely excluded, and her situation was far too poor to keep grieving indefinitely.
What on earth happened while I briefly dozed off?
She had no idea how she had ended up in this cave. But one thing remained unchanged: she needed to call for rescue quickly.
Yeju looked down at the corpse and pondered for a moment.
It might sound foolish to others, but she couldn't leave her father's remains in a dark place without a single point of light.
Besides, if she returned to Korea, would she ever be able to come back here again?
The deliberation didn't take long. Yeju resolved to leave this place together with her father's remains, even if she had to carry them.
The moment she finished deciding, she checked her father's belongings with a calm demeanor. To see if there was anything that might help her escape.
She searched through the jumper and pants pockets, but little came out.
The notebook and fountain pen he'd been holding, a cigarette case, a flashlight with a dying battery. And a radio.
"Thank goodness."
Holding the radio, she carefully turned the power on.
Beep, chiiiiik—
Fortunately, whether there was battery left, the power came on. Yeju cheered and hurriedly shouted into the radio.
"Excuse me! Excuse me, is anyone there? Someone's trapped here! Please help me!"
Chiiiiik— But no signal was caught at all.
"Please help me! Hello! Hello!"
She tried reaching out several times, but in the end only loud noise poured from the radio. Despair crept in slowly.
"Ha..."
Setting the radio down as if tossing it, she picked up the flashlight beside it.
Click, click. Just in case, she pressed the switch hoping it might light up, but it didn't budge. She set the flashlight down too and let out a deep sigh.
She rummaged through her father's clothes a few more times, but nothing more came out.
How on earth did Father get in here?
Yeju looked at her father's few belongings with helpless eyes.
It was hard to believe that a man who claimed to be on an expedition had entered such a dangerous zone so lightly equipped.
As she checked the radio and flashlight once more, something suddenly caught her eye. It was her father's notebook, with dark, dried bloodstains.
From the black notebook the corpse had held came an indescribably musty, fishy smell.
She didn't want to touch it, but she thought her father might have written something like a map of the cave.
She reluctantly opened the notebook.
"Ha..."
But barely a few minutes after examining it, disappointment swept over her.
Inside her father's notebook, instead of a map, were pages packed densely with bizarre symbols and initials only he could decipher.
She flipped through the pages carelessly. It didn't take long to reach the last page of the small notebook.
Just as she finished her rough check and was about to close the cover—
Her hand stopped dead as she suddenly noticed her father's clear handwriting on the final page.
...In exchange, I offered 100 newborn reindeer as a sacrifice, and barely succeeded in sealing the black wolf on the snowfield. The beast will be trapped on this snowfield forever, unable to conceive its offspring—its seeds of evil.
Now the Earth is safe. But I am trapped here. The only reason I have survived this long is because it wanted a contract.
The contract with it was strictly observed. It carried out the contract to the letter, without a single word out of place, and I was isolated.
Yeju knew instinctively. This was a description of the black wolf.
Her father's writing continued on the next page. Yeju hurriedly turned it.
I was deceived. I was thoroughly toyed with by that cunning, wicked beast. By the time I realized I had been tricked, it was already too late.
Perhaps written as he was dying—bloodstains were scattered and dried in patches on the paper.
Yeju, her eyes trembling endlessly, read on with difficulty.
I miss Yeju. I should have begged, when I made the contract with it, to let me see Yeju just once before I died.
My daughter, I miss you. If only I could see you again, I could sell my soul to a demon. But the demon, they say, is the black wolf.
Yeju. I miss you. My daughter Yeju. Yeju. Yeju.
---
Yeju.
The last part, where her name was written, was scrawled sideways like graffiti, over and over.
"...Dad."
What on earth had happened to her father, who had always boasted such neat, proper handwriting no matter the situation?
Hot tears welled up in her eyes once more. But she forced down the sobs threatening to burst out. This was no time to just cry.
She closed her father's notebook and tucked it into his jumper pocket.
Then, with careful hands, she lifted her father's remains. The weight of her father, reduced to bones, was terribly light.
I can't just stay here. Even if it's a dead end, let me at least find an exit.
Resolved firmly, she moved her steps while holding her father. And just as she was about to enter the nearest passage—
"What are you doing, trying to leave with my food?"
"Hngh!"
At another's voice coming from the far side of the dark cave, she let out a shrill scream.
Startled out of her wits, she dropped her father's remains and plopped down on the spot.
Step, step— A large, tall shadow slowly approached from the opposite passage.
"Wh-who are you!"
She came to her senses and tried to scramble backward, but the other had already reached her feet.
The man, lit by the faint light, was naked. His crimson eyes glinted sharply toward Yeju in the darkness.
She knew instinctively who he was.
"Y-you..."
The black wolf.
"Is the tearful reunion with your dead father over now? Humans take quite a long time to compose their emotions and regain their reason."
The man spoke in a familiar tone, as if they were old acquaintances.
A handsome face. A firm, muscular body flickered before her eyes. Despite his striking appearance, the sight of the approaching man made the hair on her head stand on end.
Humans take quite a long time to compose their emotions and regain their reason.
That meant the man had been watching her from somewhere all this time.
"D-don't come closer."
She warned with wary eyes.
And frantically picking up her father's dropped remains, she scurried back against the wall.
Her glaring eyes were quite fierce, but to anyone watching, she looked like fragile prey.
The man simply watched her actions quietly without any particular movement.
"Haha. You act like a rabbit."
And soon he curved his blood-red eyes and grinned. As if he were enjoying himself.
At that absurd reaction, she was left speechless. Yeju soon pulled herself together and shot him a sharp look.
"You brought me here, didn't you."
"That's right. I called you here. To this place—the tundra."
The man answered immediately, as if he had been waiting. At the words that he had called her to the tundra, Yeju snapped her head up and looked at him.
At her puzzled look, unable to grasp the meaning, he curled his lips upward. The teeth revealed between his crimson lips shone white.
"Ever since I found your father's pendant, I called you without fail for years—yet you only came long after your father had already died."
For years?
At the man's words, something flashed through her mind.
The dreams that had tormented her for years, to the point of disrupting her daily life.
In the end, those dreadful dreams of the black wolf that had driven her to this distant foreign land...
"Well, it doesn't matter that I called you for years."
Watching Yeju's helplessly wavering eyes, the man shifted the topic.
"What matters is that you came to the tundra in answer to my call."
"What are you..."
It was absurd. That the dream, the wolf, had called her here... She couldn't understand a word of what he was saying.
Father. The pendant. The black wolf. The tundra.
The words whirled chaotically in her head.
Yeju staggered, grasping the wall as a sudden dizziness struck her. The man silently approached her.
"Hngh!"
At the sudden ticklish touch brushing her cheek, she flinched and snapped her head up.
The naked man, now close before her, was looking down at her with crimson eyes, touching her cheek as if in play.
"You were clearly a child reeking of milk once... When did you grow up so much into a full female?"
She flinched and stepped back. But her back was blocked by the wall. She couldn't flee any further.
The man watched her with interested eyes, then reached out and began to stroke her face outright.
An instinctive repulsion rose.
Thwack! She roughly slapped away the hand fumbling at her face and cried out sharply.
"It's you, isn't it? You killed my father! Isn't it?"
"Me?"
The man pointed at himself and widened his eyes roundly. It was an exaggerated gesture. Soon a low laugh filled the cave.
"How could that be."
"Don't lie. Then how do you know me!"
"Listen. I didn't kill your father—I kept him alive. That foolish father of yours who sealed me in this godforsaken tundra."
"What..."
"Of course, it was because of the contract."
Having denied Yeju's words with a mocking tone, he suddenly wiped the expression from his face.
The laughter drained out like a receding tide, replaced by a blank face. It was a chilling transformation.
The man murmured in a dry voice devoid of any emotion.
"Rather, it's I who received the price of that trashy contract. Your father offered up his useless body as the condition for being saved."
"...A contract?"
At the unexpected word, Yeju's face wavered. She chewed her lower lip and barely managed to speak.
"What kind of contract did you... make with my father?"
"I just told you. Your father begged me to save him because he didn't want to die, and I agreed not to kill him in exchange for his corpse after death."
The man jerked his chin toward the remains Yeju held and shrugged once.
Clutching her father's remains tightly, afraid they would be taken, she asked in a trembling voice.
"Why did my father make such a contract with you?"
"I don't know how many times I have to repeat the same thing."
Perhaps displeased with the question, the man suddenly scrunched his face as if annoyed.
"Just as you humans pray to a god to be saved when on the verge of death, your father prayed to me. I merely granted his condition."
"Then why did my father try to seal you in the tundra?"
Perhaps it was an unexpected question this time. The man looked at her with fresh eyes.
He seemed to think for a moment, then readily answered.
"...Well. Perhaps because I am a descendant of the black fragment."
"Black fragment...?"
It was a term she had never heard before. But instead of explaining it, the man muttered something incomprehensible.
"Humans, including your father, are gripped by the delusion that if the offspring born from my seed were to breed, they would bring about the destruction of humanity."
"......"
"I had not the slightest interest in the troublesome business of bearing offspring, you see."
He smiled grimly and muttered as if chewing on the words.
"But those bastards like your father made such a fuss and provoked me that my mind changed."
"......"
"Now I will plant my seed in the female."
For a moment, the man's eyes met Yeju's. Crimson pupils shining vividly like blood in the dark gloom. They flashed as if about to burn her alive.
In that instant, Yeju couldn't move an inch, like small prey before a massive predator.
― Now I will plant my seed in the female.
The words stabbed into her ears like violence. She didn't know why, but she felt that if she moved now, something terrible would happen. She held her breath.
Having silently regarded the woman gone white, the man soon changed his expression again and grinned.
"Regardless, that is mine."
At last the man took his eyes off her and fixed his glinting pupils on her father's corpse.
"Though I forgot about it, not knowing he was dead, and it has already rotted away—since I'm hungry right now, I suppose I'll chew on the bones at least."
The man wore a strange smile as he looked between her father's corpse and Yeju. He seemed about to pounce at any moment and swallow both her and her father whole.
Yeju unconsciously shouted out.
"D-don't!"
Her sharp voice rang loudly through the cave.
"D-don't. Who are you, who are you to say such horrible things!"
"What reason is there for me to receive the price of the contract? There's no fool in all the world but me who would accept your father's trashy corpse as payment."
"......"
"Ah. But still, because he's your father, you want to cling to even that corpse and survive?"
The man smirked mockingly and sneered.
"Then say just one word to me. That instead of the body, you'll offer up your father's soul, still wandering somewhere on this snowfield."
"......"
"For me, devouring your father's soul is far more profitable than that rotting, stinking thing. So, will you trade soul for body?"
Yeju couldn't understand a single thing he was saying. Her head spun in circles.
Trade soul for body?
Bones, sure, could sort of be eaten—but how does one eat a soul?
To Yeju, it all just sounded like the man's absurd, insane rambling. But.
Shouldn't I just play along and get out of here?
The moment she was about to open her mouth with that thought—
"But your father's soul will never reincarnate, nor wander the underworld—it will burn inside my belly. Forever, as long as I am sealed in this snowfield."
The man, his smile erased, ground out the words with a terrifying face. His tone no longer felt like the ravings of a madman.
At his words, Yeju muttered vacantly, as if in a daze.
"...That's impossible."
Devour a soul, and that soul burns in his belly? How could anyone do such a thing?
But as if reading every one of her thoughts, the man sneered coldly.
"You're mistaking me for a human like yourself."
"D-don't lie. You're just trying to take my father's remains, aren't you? That's why you're saying such nonsense—!"
"Does what I say seem like a lie? If you can't believe it, we can verify right now. Give it here—I'll chew on a piece of that corpse's bone in front of your eyes."
The beast held out his hand and growled roughly. As if the exchange he'd had with Yeju until now had been nothing but play, his crimson eyes glinted ominously with irritation and rage.
At the ominous aura radiating from the man, Yeju's face was once again shrouded in fear.
She couldn't figure out how to accept any of this.
Her only father, out of contact for years, had been found dead.
And before that shock could even fade, a naked madman had appeared, spouting insanity about chewing on the remains.
But what frightened Yeju most of all was her own instinct telling her that the man's words were not lies.
Even if he killed her right now and desecrated her father's corpse, there was nothing she could do.
The fear and helplessness that dug into her bones blurred her vision in an instant. But she couldn't show weakness before a monster threatening to chew up her father.
She bowed her head deeply and hid her ruined face. But she couldn't hide even her heaving breaths.
Drip, drip. Hot droplets began to fall down her cheeks.
"What are you doing?"
The man, carelessly looking down at her as she trembled silently, suddenly asked.
"Please..."
"What?"
"Please, just stop..."
Someone, please wake me from this nightmare.
"If you have something to say, lift your head and say it properly."
At her barely audible murmur, the man repeated coldly. Yeju had no choice but to lift her tear-streaked face and plead with difficulty.
"...Please. Please, can't you just stop?"
"......"
"I have no one but my father. I abandoned everything and came all the way here to find him. But, hngh..."
The woman couldn't hold back and burst into tears. The man's expression as he watched her grew peculiar.
Wiping the endlessly falling tears with the back of her hand, Yeju continued.
"But my father is dead, and you're trying to take even his corpse from me."
"......"
"Please, please just let me and my father go. I'll apologize on his behalf for what he did to you. I-I'm sorry."
"......"
"B-but my father wouldn't have done such a thing with ill intent! I can vouch for that. My father, he's not that kind of bad person. Really."
The man simply watched her quietly with that peculiar look still in his eyes. Yeju sobbed and appealed to him.
For someone who had just graduated university, the ordeal that had befallen her was far too cruel and harsh.
The man did not open his mouth easily. It was around the time Yeju was gradually losing confidence.
That his hand, carrying a chilling cold, touched her cheek where tears were streaming down in drops.
At the sudden touch, Yeju's breath stopped. Smearing the trail of tears thickly with his thumb, the man clicked his tongue.
"...Tsk. Naive, or foolish—I can't tell."
"......"
"Do you want your father's corpse that badly?"
"Yes, yes."
At the question that followed, Yeju nodded like mad, not even thinking to brush his hand away.
She didn't care if she couldn't take the remains back to Korea.
Just to bury them somewhere sunny, not in a dark cave like this. So that later she could visit and pay her respects without forgetting.
If she could at least do that, she would want nothing more.
At Yeju's vigorous nodding, the man curved his red lips upward and smiled again.
"Then there's only one way."
"Wh-what way? Please tell me."
"You make a contract with me, staking your father's body."
The man's eyes suddenly sparkled. Like a child who had been eagerly awaiting those very words.
His lips curled up nearly to his ears, as if about to tear. The white fangs revealed between his lips glinted sharply.
Even with his bright smile, something felt off—perhaps because his teeth were so sharply pointed they could never be mistaken for human.
"If you grant my demand, I'll give you your father's remains. And after the contract ends, I won't eat or touch your father, or you either."
"A... contract?"
"Yes. A contract."
Beneath the man's bright smile, Yeju's eyes wavered endlessly.
"...What is it that I have to grant you?"
"That is..."
The man trailed off for a moment, then reached out before she could even register it.
Yeju's waist was yanked forward in an instant—she was in his arms in the blink of an eye.
As she gasped in surprise, the man covered her lower belly with his large palm and pressed down.
"You will receive my seed here and bear my offspring."
As if sharing a secret, the man whispered and stroked her lower belly gently. Yeju's body went rigid.
"Wh-what did you say?"
"Pregnancy."
"......"
"Here. Carrying my eggs in your womb, plenty of them."
Pressing firmly on her lower belly, the man spoke in an excited tone.
"Ah..."
Her vision went dark for a moment. Yeju staggered with a pallid face.
Then, as if to soothe her, he released the pressure and stroked her belly again.
It was a touch so sticky and lewd that even she—worn down by life, never having dated—could feel it vividly.
"Why, why... why me..."
"Why am I making you such an offer? Well..."
The man laughed sickeningly right before her, enough to give her chills.
He slowly lowered his head. His breath tickled, tickled above Yeju's lips. At a distance where their noses would touch at any moment, the man murmured.
"Because you're the only female here, and your father sealed me in this place?"
"......"
"Why that face? You're pale as if about to faint. I thought it was a pretty good deal—is it not to your liking?"
He wore an expression as if he genuinely didn't understand.
"It's not a bad offer for you. Either way, you can't escape this cave on your own."
"......"
"Besides, my offspring take the form of eggs, not humans, so you don't need to carry them in your belly for ten months. Carry them for just three months and you can lay them."
Three thick, long fingers spread out before her eyes. At that explicit gesture, Yeju's face drained of color.
"You're not thinking you can escape from here on your own, are you? While carrying your father's corpse, no less? Surely not."
"......"
"Still, let me tell you—this ice cave is directly beneath the tundra river. If you take a wrong path and get unlucky, the ceiling collapses and it's a perfect place to drown."
"......"
"Besides, the paths are so twisted that even your father's grandfather couldn't easily find his way out. Of course, I won't just stand by and let that happen."
The man, growling low, went on to utter terrifying words.
"If you ignore my warning and try to leave, before you drown, I'll tear apart and chew up both your father's corpse and his soul. Then I'll violate you until your crotch is torn, and before you conceive, I'll snap your neck and kill you."
After spouting words disgusting enough to make her vomit, the man smiled playfully. His crimson eyes curved.
What, what did I just hear?
Her breath caught in her throat as if she were hyperventilating. Her fingertips trembled, and the color had long since drained from her lips.
As if waiting for her answer, anticipation gradually filled his eyes.
He really... really means to do it.
It was no crude joke—the beast was sincere.
She panted raggedly. The demon-like man holding her waist was endlessly, terribly frightening.
She had no idea how to resolve this situation.
"You have to answer. Hmm?"
The man gently urged Yeju, who only trembled like prey before a predator.
Yeju, panting, answered with difficulty.
"I... I need time to think."
"Time to think? Well, fine."
Surprisingly, the man readily accepted her words. The arm that had been constricting her waist like a chain was released at once.
She was free, yet she still couldn't move an inch, as if still held in his embrace.
"Then I'll come back exactly this time tomorrow."
"......"
"Think carefully about what the wise choice is. Whether it's better to have even a worthless skull, or to let a paltry soul burn forever in the fires of hell. Perhaps the latter might be better for you."
Chuckle. With a thug-like laugh, the man slowly retreated.
It was the moment he left her and stood in complete darkness.
Crack, crunch, crack— Horrible sounds of bones breaking and locking together rang out. At the same time, the man's shadow cast on the cave wall swelled larger and larger.
Crrrunch, crack. The man's body swelled endlessly, until at last it grew so massive it touched the ceiling.
The raw stench of a beast flowed sickeningly into Yeju's nostrils.
"Grrrrr—"
The man, now transformed into a black wolf, flashed crimson eyes in the darkness.
After glaring at her intently for a while, the beast suddenly vanished into one of the several passages.
"Huk..."
The moment the black wolf disappeared, Yeju slid down to the ground as if collapsing.
Even though the absurd sight of a man transforming into a wolf had unfolded before her eyes, she wasn't particularly surprised.
The emotions that seized her were only the chill, fear, and terror digging into her bones. Nothing else.
Even though the beast had vanished, warmth would not easily return to Yeju's cold fingertips. Her father's remains slipped softly from her loosened arms and fell to the floor.
But she had not the slightest thought of picking them up again and setting out.
The beast had clearly disappeared, yet that strange gaze she had felt in the heart of the forest was still there...
Hugging her knees with both arms, Yeju buried her head deeply and sobbed.
How did things come to this?
Was it because she hadn't looked for her father sooner?
Caring for her father who had regained his light—in truth, it had been no different from not paying attention at all.
When her father was obsessed with the beast and shut himself in his study, she had never once actively tried to stop him.
She had left room for him to fall deeper, to cling harder—and was she being punished for that now?
"Hngh... hngh, hngh..."
The situation was too overwhelming, too terrifying for Yeju.
But what frightened her more was the black wolf who might come at the same time tomorrow and kill her.
---
She didn't know how much time had passed.
He had said he would come exactly at the same time the next day. But without a clock, Yeju couldn't know exactly when that was. Even if the man had lied about the time.
Sleepless, anxious hours passed.
"Hey. Are you done thinking?"
At last, the man came.
He asked, his lips curled up as if about to tear, whether she had finished thinking about the contract.
"What do I have to do?"
Yeju asked with a soul-stripped face. The man answered in a tender tone, as if soothing a small child.
"I have to get inside your womb to plant my seed, so undress."
